My Friend The Bear
I watched the bear cross the road in front of my house. He wasn't a big bear, or mean looking. He seemed to be a kind and gentle animal. And I wanted him as my pet. So, not thinking, out the front door I ran after him.
As I approached the bear I yelled to him, "Hey you silly bear, where are you going? Wait a minute! I want to be friends!" He must of heard me because he stopped suddenly and turned his head toward my direction.
We locked eyes and I saw him smile at me, so I smiled back. He must also want to be friend, I thought. So, I slowed to a walk and continued the rest of the way toward him. I was eager to make a new friend because I was quite lonely.
As I approached him, he seemed to grow bigger. He was no longer the small bear I thought he was. His head was the size of a boulder. His paws had razor sharp claws and his fir was as black as night. He must have weighed two tons.
I stood in front of him, diminutive in stature and frail in comparison. His pointed teeth glistened in the sun. Saliva dripped from his mouth and dropped to the floor at my feet. I felt his breath on me. It was warm and it stunk like stale meat.
Silently, he gestured with one enormous paw as though we was offering to shake my hand. Without a second thought I brought my palm forward as a sign of friendship. He then stood straight up, towering over me. I felt so small in his presence. His shadow obscured me in darkness. He opened his giant maw and with one quick lunge, swallowed me whole.
I guess he just wanted me as his lunch. For him, friendship was out of the question. In the end, I was the silly one, not he.
